Pest Description

Pigeon Behavior

Pigeons are most active in morning hours, foraging for a wide range of resources, including seeds, grains, and human garbage. Natural scavengers, pigeons have thrived in urban environments specifically because of their willingness to eat just about anything that they can find. Pigeons prefer to roost in areas that are protected from harsh elements and will choose a nesting spot tucked away from human interaction. Typical nesting spots include loading docks, private staircases, commercial garage ledges, and residential rooftop eaves. While a pigeon in the wild may live up to 15 years, urban-dwelling pigeons only survive for 3-4 years.

Problems Caused by Pigeons

The diseases carried and spread by pigeons remain a primary concern, with their droppings being a main vehicle for various bacteria and viruses. Encephalitis, salmonella, pigeon ornithosis, Newcastle disease, cryptococcosis, and toxoplasmosis are just some of the diseases, conditions, and pathogens that have been connected to pigeon droppings. In addition to disease, pigeons also carry various parasites, including fleas, mites, ticks, lice, and other biting insects. Pigeon excrement is also highly acidic, and can cause significant structural damage over time. Allowing pigeons to roost in a residential or commercial space is risky and sometimes dangerous.

Preventing Issues with Pigeons

Nets and exclusionary measures can go a long way in preventing pigeons from roosting. There are also specific roosting deterrents that can be placed on ledges to make it more difficult for pigeons to roost comfortably, including spikes, bird wires, and electrical shock strips. Depending on the environment and circumstances, trapping and baiting can also be effective within an approved bird control plan.

Controlling and Eliminating Pigeons

Pigeons can cause significant damage and pose major problems for structures of all kinds. The best way to eliminate pigeons in an effective and safety-conscious way is to call an experienced bird control expert, preferably one who can design and maintain an individual plan for the specific structure. Pest Control Inc. uses a variety of different treatment techniques, including surveillance, baiting, and exclusion solutions.

In addition to residential bird removal, we also provide bird removal services for businesses.
