How to Keep Cockroaches Out of Your Home

In Pest Control Tips, Pest Prevention

Cockroaches are some of the most adaptable pests on the planet. It’s believed they’ve been around for more than 280 million years! During this time, they’ve evolved and learned how to survive in various environments, making them difficult to control.

Cockroaches aren’t just a nuisance. These pests are outright disgusting. They are known to spread 33 kinds of bacteria, 6 types of parasitic worms, and 7 kinds of human pathogens. They also exacerbate allergy symptoms. These facts make it all the more important to take the necessary steps to keep cockroaches out of your home.

Maintain Cleanliness

It’s common knowledge that cockroaches are attracted to filth, so practicing good cleanliness is one way to keep cockroaches away.

  • Pick up spills & crumbs
  • Sweep regularly
  • Vacuum regularly
  • Toss out the trash often and use covered receptacles

Eliminate Moisture

Cockroaches can only go about a week or two without water so they’re always on the lookout for sources of water. It’s common to find them in cupboards beneath sinks. Repair leaky pipes and leaky faucets and eliminate sources of standing water like pet bowls, puddles, and wet sponges.

Seal Cracks

Cockroaches are nocturnal creatures so they love dark and tight spaces. And because they have relatively flat bodies, they can squeeze through spaces smaller than their body. Walk around your home and seal any cracks and gaps within your home using silicone caulk.

Store Food Properly

Cockroaches will eat nearly anything from food and toothpaste to glue and hair. Store your food, including pantry products in airtight containers. Don’t leave pet food out all night either. Storing your food properly will give them one less reason to try and gain access to your home.

Eliminate Clutter

Eliminate clutter and stay organized as much as possible to prevent hiding places for cockroaches. And use plastic storage bins with lids for organizing as cardboard and paper provide both food and hiding places for cockroaches.
