How to Prevent Scorpions

Bark Scorpion. Pest Control Inc. offer tips to help prevent scorpions in Las Vegas NV.

During the summer months, it is very likely you will see a scorpion or two near your desert home. Newer homes built farther away are more at risk. Construction pushes scorpions from their habitat to find new shelter.

In the Las Vegas area, there are 25 scorpion species. One of them is the Bark Scorpion, which is the most venomous in the country. These pests are tiny, and they can squeeze through an opening as small as a paper clip. And when they sting, they can cause your blood pressure to rise and cause an increase in your heart rate.

Once scorpions get inside your property, it’s hard to get rid of them and requires professional assistance. That’s why we made this list of tips to help keep them out. However, the best way to prevent scorpions is through professional help from Pest Control Inc.

7 Scorpion Prevention Tips

If scorpions are in your home, it’s wise to contact a professional. They may recommend these prevention tips to help keep scorpions away in the future: Several actions that may help keep scorpions out of your home include:

  1. Keep your yard free of debris piles and branches. Scorpions hide under piles of leaves or other debris, so eliminating their source of shelter may send them on their way.
  2. Trim back branches and bushes. Keeping your landscaping tidy and a good distance away from the perimeter of your home may keep scorpions from coming too close to your foundation line.
  3. Seal cracks and crevices in your home. Scorpions can crawl into the tiniest of spaces, so ensuring your home is free of any holes that may grant them access is key. Fill in any cracks and caulk around windows and doors.
  4. Keep your indoor area clean to avoid other insects. If you leave food out or keep a messy home, scorpions will come inside to seek out other insects. Making sure to store all food in sealed containers and throwing trash away promptly can help deter this.
  5. Eliminate moisture: Scorpions are attracted to moisture. In fact, they can live for months on just water alone. So repair any broken and/or leaky pipes.
  6. Vacuum and dust: Scorpions often hide in dark, undisturbed areas.
  7. Get rid of any prey: This includes insects, spiders, and crickets.

What Attracts Scorpions to Come Inside?

Just like any other pest, scorpions are constantly searching for shelter and food. This search often leads them to enter any home or property that can be easily accessed. Some of the reasons scorpions crawl inside your home include:

  • They are searching for water, food, and shelter.
  • Because they are climbers, they may climb the exterior of your home and enter through the attic.
  • If you have other insects in your home, scorpions are even more tempted to come inside.
  • Cold desert nights may drive them inside.
  • They simply have easy access due to holes or cracks in your foundation.

Types of Scorpions in Las Vegas

Las Vegas is home to 25 different species. However, you’ll mostly see these two:

  • Bark Scorpions: Also known as the Brown Scorpion, this species is the most venomous in North America. These scorpions are typically tan in color, they have a thin tail with a curved stinger, and they are about 2 to 3 inches in length. Because of their small size, they can easily gain access to homes. They are the only type of scorpion that can climb vertically. Bark scorpions do not burrow but instead rest under woodpiles, rocks, and other debris.
  • Desert Hairy Scorpion: On top of this scorpion being really scary looking, it’s also very aggressive. Desert Hairy Scorpions are typically yellow with a dark top and are covered with fine brown hairs. They also have pincers. These scorpions average about 5.5 inches in length, making them one of the largest scorpion species around. In fact, they are large enough to eat lizards. These scorpions prefer to burrow.
