Prevent Ants
Serving Las Vegas | Henderson | North Las Vegas
Ants are the number one nuisance pest in the country. Some will contaminate your food while others will damage your home. When they get inside of your home and establish nests, they can be very difficult to get rid of. So take these steps to help prevent an ant infestation before it starts.
Block Access
If you’ve spotted ants in your home, take a couple of minutes and follow them to see where they’re getting in from. Oftentimes, a poorly sealed entryway door or window is the cause. Walk around the perimeter of your home and use a silicone-based caulk to seal cracks ants may fit through. Caulk will degrade over time as it’s exposed to the elements, so reapply as necessary.
Eliminate Water Sources
Ants need water to survive. This is why you commonly see them underneath sinks and near water leaks. Repair water leaks and eliminate other sources of moisture to help deter ants. Ants are attracted to pet food and water. If you have pets, have designated feeding times, then put their dishes away afterward.

Eliminate Wood
Carpenter ants are especially attracted to moist or rotting wood. Remove any wet or rotting wood from your home, and trim back shrubs and plants in your landscaping. Ants often use shrubs as bridges to gain entry into homes. If you keep firewood, store it away from your home on a raised structure.
Clean all Surfaces
It’s no surprise that ants are attracted to crumbs and sugar substances. So one of the best things you can do to help prevent ants is to keep your home clean. Vacuum, sweep, wash dishes, and wipe down surfaces regularly.
Store Food in Sealed Containers
Open food containers attract ants and a host of other pets. Store your food in airtight glass, plastic, or metal containers. This will keep ants away and keep your food fresh, longer.
Use Ant Baits
Try a simple DIY ant bait using ⅛ teaspoon of boric acid mixed with ¼ cup jelly. Spread this mixture around your home and leave it for about two weeks. Make sure to keep this DIY ant bait and away from children and pets. Another DIY ant control treatment is using a powder such as cinnamon or cloves. Ants are sensitive to fine powders and will avoid walking through them, so sprinkle talcum powder or spices near potential entry points.
